Bottle version: when your baby refuses the bottle
If your baby refuses the bottle
Does your baby suddenly drink less, turn their head away, or cry as soon as the bottle appears? Many parents search for “baby refuses bottle,” “bottle feeding not working,” or “refusing bottle feeding.” This may indicate bottle aversion: not ‘not wanting,’ but a protective reaction of the nervous system when feeding becomes associated with tension or pressure. Sometimes subtle, sometimes very clear.
Recognizable signals
- your baby refuses the bottle or pushes it away
- turning away as soon as you offer the bottle
- crying at the sight of the bottle or during feeding
- taking bites and then angrily stopping
- only wanting to drink (half) asleep
- drinking less and less / suddenly less bottle feeding
- a lot of unrest around feedings
- insufficient intake causing growth concerns
- feeding feels like pulling, pushing, or persuading
- your baby only drinks when you use “tricks”
What happens when a baby refuses bottle feeding?
If a baby repeatedly experiences tension during feeding, the body may start to see feeding as unsafe. The nervous system then switches to protection mode. This manifests as avoidance, turning away, crying, or suddenly stopping drinking. This is not stubbornness, but a stress response.
Well-intentioned pressure (for example, “just keep going,” offering more often, or repeatedly trying) can unintentionally reinforce this. The key lies in restoring safety and trust around the bottle.
Tip: if at the consultation clinic you hear “it will pass on its own” but you sense tension building, trust your feelings. Early intervention often prevents the pattern from becoming deeply ingrained.
How I work
1. Intake
We carefully map out your situation: when the refusal began, what has been tried, and what still works.
2. Analysis
You film one or more feeding moments. I analyze signals, tension, timing, and interaction (without judgment).
3. Guidance
You will receive a clear plan with steps to relieve the pressure of the bottle and rebuild confidence.
Are you unsure if this applies to you? If your baby refuses the bottle or drinks less and less, it is useful to look early at the pattern. Send your request, and we will discuss the best first step.
Experiences of parents
“Good tips for the problems we experienced with bottle feeding. Daniëlle took all the time for us. You can ask her anything. Truly recommended.”
— parents of a son
“After nine months of tube feeding, our little son had developed a severe bottle aversion. We had tried everything. Thanks to Daniëlle, we understood what was happening and could approach it differently. Bottle feeding and practice bites now feel relaxed.”
— parents of a prematurely born son
“Our baby didn’t want to drink and had to vomit a lot. Daniëlle listened carefully and came up with useful, clear advice. Within a few days, we already saw change. We finally felt heard.”
— parents of a baby with feeding difficulties
“After months of hospital visits, reflux complaints, and tube feeding, we didn’t know what to do anymore. We found Daniëlle through Instagram. Her plan was professional, calm, and well-founded. We saw quick improvement and regained confidence.”
— parents of a premature daughter
“We had several consultations in the Netherlands, Belgium, and even England. Daniëlle’s plan gave us the most clarity and practical tools. There is still too little known about bottle aversion — her guidance made all the difference for us.”
— father of a son
You don’t have to carry this alone
If your baby refuses the bottle or becomes increasingly restless while feeding, it helps to look early at what your baby is trying to tell you. Together, we bring calm back to feeding.
