What Merinowool does that other fabrics don’t

Temperature regulation

Merino adapts to your baby’s body temperature — warm when it’s cold, cool when it gets warm. Essential in the first months, when a newborn can’t regulate this yet.

Non-itchy

Merino fibers are so fine they feel softer than many cotton fabrics. Safe for the most sensitive newborn skin — also for preemies.

Breathable

Wool wicks moisture away and allows air to circulate. Your baby moves and sleeps in a natural second skin — no synthetic layer trapping heat.

Sustainable and timeless

Wool naturally has antibacterial properties. Airing is often enough — less washing, longer lasting beauty. A woolen boxpakje is passed down from child to child.

A woolen boxpakje is the first garment I recommend to new parents. It regulates temperature, doesn’t itch, and keeps your baby calm — even when the environment changes.

Frequently asked questions

Is a woolen boxpakje suitable for a newborn baby?
Yes, from birth. Our Merinowool has fibers of 12–18 microns — so fine they don’t itch on the most sensitive baby skin. OEKO-TEX certified and mulesing-free. Also suitable for premature babies, provided the size fits well.
What is the difference between a boxpakje and a jumpsuit?
No difference in content — it is the same cut with long sleeves and legs in one piece. Boxpakje is the most commonly used Dutch term, jumpsuit is also widely used. At Moalie, we use both terms for the same type of garment.
Is a wool onesie also suitable for summer?
Yes. Merinowool regulates temperature in both directions. In summer, you can wear a thinner one as the only layer — it ventilates and prevents overheating. Many parents are surprised at how cool their baby stays in a wool onesie on warm days.
How do I wash a wool onesie?
Preferably wash by hand, or on the wool program (30°C) with a mild wool detergent. Do not wring — gently press out water and lay flat to dry. Airing is often enough, as wool is naturally self-cleaning.
Up to which size are the wool onesies available?
Our wool onesies come in sizes from 50/56 up to 74/80. The collection is specifically designed for newborns and babies in their first months.

Wool onesies for newborns and babies — soft, warm, and breathable

A wool baby onesie is more than just clothing — it’s a second skin. Made from soft merinowool, it helps regulate body temperature, feels comfortable against the skin, and allows your newborn to move freely. Whether you call it a wool baby onesie, onesie, or jumpsuit: it’s the same trusted garment parents keep choosing. From size 50/56 to 74/80, for sleeping, carrying, and moving.

Why merino wool doesn’t itch

Regular wool has fibers wide enough to bend on skin contact, causing a prickly sensation. Merino fibers are so fine — less than 20 microns — that they move with the skin instead of poking. The result is a fabric that feels softer than many cotton alternatives and is safe for a newborn’s sensitive skin.

Wool baby onesie for newborns — from size 50

Our wool baby suits are available from size 50.

How do you wash a wool onesie?

  • Wash at 30°C, on the wool program or by hand
  • Use a mild wool detergent
  • Do not wring — gently press out water
  • Lay flat to dry — never use the dryer
  • Air drying is often enough — wool is self-cleaning

Combining wool onesies

A merino onesie is the perfect basic garment for the first months. Pair it with a merino hat and Merinowool booties for a complete, temperature-regulating outfit. On cooler days, wear a wool cardigan over it, or wrap your baby in a cocoon for extra comfort.

Soft & warm from day one

Merino by moalie is our collection of woolens for babies and toddlers: soft hats, booties, blankets, and knitwear that breathe and keep your little one comfortable – all year round.

FAQs

From birth. Merinowool is suitable for newborns, including premature babies, provided the fibers are fine enough and the garment fits well without tight elastics or pressure points.

Yes. That is precisely one of the strong qualities of merino wool. The fiber can absorb up to about 35 percent of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet. The moisture is drawn away from the skin and released again through evaporation. As a result, the skin stays drier than with cotton or synthetic fabrics.

With merino wool, the fiber thickness says a lot about the comfort. It is measured in microns: the lower the number, the finer and softer the wool feels. For babies, fibers of approximately 15 to 19 microns are usually used.

For Moalie products, we exclusively select fine merino wool that is gentle on sensitive baby skin.

That depends on the situation. Cotton is comfortable in warm temperatures and is often more affordable. Merinowool naturally regulates temperature and wicks moisture. This makes it especially suitable in the first months, during sleep, and in changing temperatures. Many parents combine both materials.

Merinowool can shrink if it is not washed properly. Therefore, we recommend hand washing merinowool clothing with a special wool detergent and cold or lukewarm water. Not every washing machine has a reliable wool wash program. Afterwards, lay the garment flat to dry so it retains its shape.
