Sun and your baby: how to protect your little one safely this summer
As soon as the sun comes out, we all head outside. And of course you want to take your baby outside with you. But did you know that a baby's skin and eyes are much more sensitive to sunlight than those of adults? In this blog, we share practical and safe tips to protect your child from the sun - from sunglasses to smart clothing choices.
1. Choose shade (but be careful!)
The best protection against the sun is shade. Preferably place your stroller or picnic blanket under a tree, parasol or awning. Note: UV radiation can also penetrate in the shade, and sunlight is reflected by sand, water and paving. That is why additional protection is essential.
2. Do not use a cloth over the stroller
A common mistake: hanging a hydrophilic cloth or blanket over the stroller to protect your child from the sun. This seems logical, but is actually dangerous:
- The temperature under the cloth rises quickly (up to 8 degrees!) — it quickly becomes stuffy and too warm
- Air circulation is limited
- UV radiation is often not sufficiently blocked
It is better to use a special sun canopy, parasol or sunshade that ventilates and protects.
3. Sunglasses: protect the sensitive eyes
Babies' eyes are extra vulnerable to UV radiation. Their eye lens does not filter well yet, which means that harmful rays reach the retina. Baby sunglasses with UV400 lenses offer 100% protection against UVA and UVB radiation.
When choosing sunglasses, pay attention to:
- UV400 filter
- Flexible and pinch-free frame
- BPA-free materials
- CE mark
And let's be honest – it also looks wonderfully quirky.

4. Protective clothing
A light outfit with long sleeves and trouser legs offers extra protection. Choose breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen. There is also special UV-resistant clothing, ideal for the beach or in the water.
Don't forget the head either: a sun hat with a wide brim or neck flap is a must.
5. Lubricate, but not too early
It is best not to use sunscreen on babies under 6 months. Their skin is still very thin and sensitive. If you cannot avoid the sun, apply a small amount to uncovered areas with a special baby-friendly sunscreen (mineral filter, fragrance-free, SPF 50).
For older babies and toddlers: apply every 2 hours , and always after swimming or sweating.
6. Be aware of the heat
In addition to UV radiation, heat is an important point of attention. Babies cannot yet regulate their body temperature well. Pay attention to signs of overheating such as redness, irritability, crying a lot or weakness. Always provide sufficient water (breast or bottle feeding) and cooling.
Sun = enjoyment, if you do it smart
With the right preparation, your little one can enjoy the sun to the fullest — safely and comfortably. Think shade, protective clothing, good sunglasses and ventilation in the stroller. This will make every sunny outing a carefree experience.
At Moalie you'll find stylish baby essentials that combine comfort and safety — even when the sun is shining.

Should my baby wear sunglasses?
Yes. Baby eyes are extra sensitive to UV radiation and let in up to 70% more sunlight than adult eyes. Sunglasses with UV400 filter protect the retina.
