What is the best way to store wool?
How to keep merino wool beautiful, soft and fresh – season after season
Merino wool is a remarkable material. It breathes, regulates temperature, and cleans itself—properties that make it so popular with babies and toddlers. But to truly keep wool beautiful for a long time, it's important to store it properly.
Many people immediately think of "careful washing" when they think of wool clothing, but how you store it is just as important. Incorrect storage can disrupt the fiber's natural balance.
1. Let the wool air out properly first
Before storing a wool item, always let it air out. Merino wool purifies itself with oxygen—airing it out is often enough to eliminate odors.
It's best not to use scented sachets or perfumes in your wardrobe: these can damage the fibers or give the wool an overly strong odor.
2. Use breathable cotton bags
At Moalie, we consciously package all our wool products in cotton bags and pouches . We do this not only to avoid plastic, but also because it 's better for the wool itself .
Wool is a living, breathable material. Storing it in plastic can cause moisture to build up, making the fiber brittle or causing a musty smell. A cotton bag, on the other hand, allows air to pass through, allowing the wool to retain its natural moisture balance. This keeps it soft, airy, and fresh, even when not in use.
Our cotton packaging is not only beautiful and sustainable, but also really contributes to the lifespan of your wool.

Why cotton bags and not just in the closet?
You can, of course, also store wool loosely in the cupboard, but cotton bags offer that little bit of extra protection — especially with natural materials such as merino wool.
- Protects against dust, moths and light , without sealing the fibers
- Maintains air circulation so the fibers can breathe
- Absorbs residual moisture and prevents musty odors
- Prevents friction with rough surfaces in the cupboard or drawer
In short: a cotton bag creates the ideal microclimate for wool— protected, yet breathable . That's why at Moalie, we consciously use cotton packaging: plastic-free, sustainable, and functional for the longevity of your wool.
3. Store wool flat, not hanging
Due to the weight, wool can lose its shape on a hanger. Therefore, fold your items neatly and place them flat in a cupboard or drawer. If necessary, use tissue paper between the layers to prevent friction.
4. Protect against moths, but in a natural way
Moths love dampness, dust, and dark corners. Make sure clothing is clean and dry before storing. For extra protection, use lavender or cedarwood—natural scents that repel moths without chemicals.
5. An extra tip from Moalie
Our cotton bags are reusable. Use them not only for storing wool, but also for separating baby clothes in the closet or taking them with you on the go. They're durable, breathable, and washable—just what you'd expect from a Moalie product.
In summary
- Always allow wool to air thoroughly before storing it.
- Use breathable cotton bags instead of plastic
- Store woolen clothes flat, not hanging
- Keep it dry, clean and naturally protected
Storing your wool properly will ensure it lasts for years — and stays as soft and comfortable as the first day.
