What exactly is mulesing-free wool?
Merino wool is soft, breathable, and temperature-regulating. But not all merino wool is produced in an animal-friendly way. At Moalie, we consciously choose mulesing-free merino wool out of respect for animals, people, and the environment.

What is mulesing?
Mulesing is a painful procedure in which the skin around the hindquarters of a Merino sheep is cut away, usually without anesthesia. This practice is primarily used in Australia to prevent fly maggot infection (myiasis). While this reduces the risk of infection, mulesing causes significant animal suffering.
Why we choose mulesing-free merino wool
As a baby coach and neonatal nurse with 27 years of experience, I understand the importance of comfort and safety. This also applies to the origins of our products. Our merino wool comes from sheep that are raised humanely, without mulesing. We use only GOTS-certified merino wool from certified organic farming (kbT) . Furthermore, our products are OEKO-TEX 100 certified and produced in BSCI-audited factories.
Benefits of mulesing-free merino wool
- Animal-friendly: no painful procedures, but caring, ethical treatment of sheep.
- Better wool quality: healthy sheep produce softer, stronger and more beautiful wool.
- More sustainable: wool from KBT is part of regenerative agriculture. Good for the soil, animals, and people.
- Perfect for babies: hypoallergenic, breathable and temperature-regulating.
How do you recognize mulesing-free merino wool?
Look for quality marks like GOTS , ZQ Merino , or the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) . At Moalie, you'll find only mulesing-free wool, which we also state in every product description and associated certification.
Backed by science
Research from the University of Queensland shows that mulesing causes stress and lasting behavioral changes in lambs. Humane alternatives, such as genetic selection and local hygiene, have been proven effective. This knowledge guides our choice of materials.
Our mission
As the founder of Moalie, I see it as my mission to create baby clothes that are truly safe: for your little one and for the world they're growing up in. That's why we choose 100% cruelty-free merino wool. Not because we have to, but because we should.
