What exactly is mulesing-free wool?
Merino wool is soft, breathable, and temperature-regulating. However, not all merino wool is produced animal-friendly. At Moalie, we consciously choose mulesing-free merino wool, out of respect for animals, people, and the environment.
What is mulesing?
Mulesing is a painful procedure in which skin is cut away from around the hindquarters of a merino sheep, usually without anesthesia. This practice is primarily used in Australia to prevent flystrike (myiasis). Although this reduces the risk of infection, mulesing causes severe animal suffering.
Why we choose mulesing-free merino wool
As a neonatal nurse with almost 30 years of experience, I know how important comfort and safety are. Including the origin of our products. Our merino wool comes from sheep that are cared for humanely, without mulesing. We exclusively use GOTS-certified merino wool from kbT (controlled organic animal husbandry). Additionally, our products are OEKO-TEX 100 certified and produced in BSCI-audited factories.

Scientifically supported
Research from the University of Queensland shows that mulesing causes stress and permanent behavioral changes in lambs. Animal-friendly alternatives, such as genetic selection and local hygiene, have been proven effective. This knowledge guides our choice of materials.
