As a parent, you want your baby to be safe and comfortable. Choosing the right baby clothes plays a major role in this. Soft and breathable materials such as cotton and merino wool, practical closures and avoiding irritating labels ensure optimum wearing comfort. Washing new clothes is also important to prevent skin irritations. Recent research also shows that cheap baby clothes, such as those from Shein, can contain dangerous substances. Therefore, consciously choose safe, high-quality baby clothes such as rompers, newborn slippers and toddler clothes that are made with your child's well-being in mind.
👶 T ips for safe and comfortable baby clothes
As a young parent, you want nothing more than for your baby to feel safe and comfortable. One of the most important ways to ensure this is by consciously choosing the right baby clothes. From materials to fit — everything plays a role.
As a neonatal nurse, I see many types of baby clothes every day. They are often cute, but not always practical, safe or comfortable. What do you look for when choosing the best clothes for your little one?
1. Choose soft and breathable materials
Your baby's skin is vulnerable and sensitive. That's why it's important to choose soft and breathable fabrics such as cotton or wool, for example merino wool. It's best to avoid polyester. This synthetic material retains heat and moisture and can cause irritation. Babies with sensitive skin react extra strongly to this.
2. Pay attention to loose decorations
Buttons, bows and cords can be cute, but they also pose a choking hazard. Always check that they are securely fastened or opt for clothing without embellishments, especially for newborn clothing.
3. Ensure a comfortable fit
Choose clothing that allows for movement and growth without being too loose. Think elasticated cuffs and soft fabrics. Large decorations on the back are less practical — babies lie down a lot, so soft, flat clothing is best.
Example: our denim pants Levi are made of French terry in denim color. This way your child gets the look of jeans, but the comfort of joggers.
4. Avoid irritating labels
Labels can be sharp and irritating to sensitive skin. Choose clothing with soft cotton labels or remove them gently. At Moalie we use organic cotton labels to prevent irritation.
5. Practical closures make the difference
Wrap-over shirts, rompers and baby clothes with snaps or zippers are ideal. Especially in the newborn phase, when babies find it annoying when something goes over their head. Be careful with Velcro: soft varieties are kinder to the skin.
6. Wash new baby clothes before use
New clothes can contain dye or chemical residues. Always wash all new clothes — from rompers to newborn booties — with a mild, fragrance-free detergent first. Avoid fabric softeners with fragrances or dyes. (Also read our blog about washing baby clothes)
⚠️ Please note: harmful substances in cheap baby clothes
Recent research by the Belgian consumer organization Testaankoop has shown that children's clothing from Shein contains dangerous substances. In 10 of the 25 tested garments, harmful chemicals were found, including hormone disruptors and heavy metals. In one pair of children's shoes, the permitted values were even exceeded by far.
These substances can cause skin irritation and negatively affect the development of children. It is therefore essential to consciously choose safe and high-quality baby clothing.
By keeping these tips in mind when choosing baby clothes, you can ensure that your little one not only looks cute but feels comfortable too.
Invest in quality clothing that not only feels good, but also meets the highest standards for safety and comfort.
