What clothes does a baby wear while sleeping?

As an experienced Neonatology Nurse and Baby Sleep Coach, I know how important it is for a baby to sleep comfortably and safely. Parents often ask me what clothes their baby should wear to bed. The answer depends on several factors, including the temperature in the room and the baby's sensitivity to heat and cold.

In this blog I share my insights and explain why the Merino Wool Sleepsuit Teddy from Moalie is an excellent choice

1. What do you dress a baby for sleeping?

A baby cannot keep itself warm yet and is dependent on the right clothing and environment to stay warm. I advise parents to always check the room temperature before dressing their little one for bed.

  • For cool nights : I recommend using natural, breathable fabrics, such as merino wool. This material provides warmth without the risk of overheating.
  • For warmer temperatures : Thin, breathable layers are ideal, allowing you to always feel your baby's neck to check if he or she is warm enough.

2. What is the ideal room temperature for a baby?

According to the advice of Safe Sleep, the ideal room temperature for a baby is between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius. This ensures that your baby does not get too hot or too cold. By choosing the right sleepwear, you can help to keep your baby's body temperature stable. A sleeping bag made of merino wool, such as the Sleepsuit Teddy, is perfect for keeping your baby comfortable within these safe temperature limits.

3. When do you use hot water bottles?

Sometimes it may be necessary to provide extra warmth with hot water bottles, especially if the room temperature is on the low side (below 16 degrees Celsius) or if you have just come from hospital with a newborn baby who still has trouble regulating his own temperature. It is important to use hot water bottles in a safe way.

I recommend using metal jugs that you fill with hot water.

These are the safest to use because they retain heat well and leak less quickly than rubber hot water bottles. Make sure the hot water bottle is always properly sealed and use a hot water bottle bag to prevent direct contact with your baby's skin. Never place the hot water bottle directly against your baby, but place it in the bed at a safe distance to prevent overheating with the cap towards the foot end.

4. Why is merino wool so suitable for sleepwear?

From my experience, I know that a restful, deep sleep also depends on the right body temperature. Merino wool is one of the best materials to support this. It is naturally temperature regulating, which means it keeps your baby warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s hot. It’s also super soft and hypoallergenic, which is great for your baby’s sensitive skin.

I have used my knowledge as a sleep coach and nurse to develop our sleepwear at Moalie. Our Teddy Sleepsuit is designed to give parents peace of mind knowing that their baby can sleep comfortably and safely.

  • Breathable and moisture absorbent : This prevents your baby from getting too warm or feeling damp, which contributes to a better quality of sleep .

6. Tips for a safe and comfortable sleeping environment

  • Ensure a constant room temperature between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius.
  • Do not use loose blankets or pillows in the crib to avoid the risk of suffocation.
  • Choose breathable materials for bedding and sleepwear.

7. Why choose Moalie?

At Moalie, we combine my knowledge and experience as a neonatology nurse and baby and sleep coach with high-quality materials such as merino wool. Our sleepwear, including the Teddy Sleepsuit, is designed with comfort, safety and sustainability in mind. Merino wool is not only practical, but also offers a luxurious experience that helps your baby sleep peacefully and deeply. In addition, our sleepsuit has foldover sleeves. The sleeves are made in such a way that you can fold the fabric over your baby's hands. The hands stay warm and it also protects against scratching. This is a lot safer than using loose mittens. The loose (anti-scratch) mittens pose a suffocation hazard.
