Sun and your baby: here's how to protect your little one safely this summer

As soon as the sun shows up, we head outside en masse. And of course, you'll want to take your baby outside then, too. But did you know that a baby's skin and eyes are much more sensitive to sunlight than those of adults? In this blog, we share practical and safe tips for protecting your baby from the sun.

1. Choose shade (but be careful!).

The best protection from the sun is shade. Preferably place your stroller or picnic blanket under a tree, umbrella or canopy. Note that even in the shade, UV rays can penetrate, and sunlight reflects through sand, water and pavement. Therefore, additional protection is essential.

2. Do not use a cloth over the stroller

A common mistake: hanging a hydrophilic cloth or blanket over the stroller to protect your child from the sun. This seems logical, but is actually dangerous:

- The temperature under the canvas rises quickly (up to 8 degrees!) - it soon becomes stuffy and too hot

- Air circulation is restricted

- UV radiation is often not adequately blocked

Rather, use a special canopy, parasol or sunshade that ventilates as well as protects.

3. Sunglasses: protect sensitive eyes

Babies' eyes are especially vulnerable to UV radiation. Their eye lens does not yet filter properly, allowing harmful rays to reach the retina. Baby sunglasses with UV400 lenses provide 100% protection from UVA and UVB radiation.

When choosing sunglasses, pay attention:

- UV400 filter

- Flexible and pinch-free frame

- BPA-free materials

- CE mark

(And yes - it also looks incredibly cute!)

4. Protective clothing

A breezy outfit with long sleeves and pant legs offers extra protection. Choose breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen. There is also special UV-resistant clothing, ideal for the beach or in the water.

Don't forget the head either: a sun hat with wide brim or neck flap is a must.

5. Lubricate, but not too early

For babies younger than 6 months, it is preferable not to use sunscreen. Their skin is still very thin and sensitive. If you cannot avoid the sun, apply a small amount to uncovered areas with a special baby-friendly sunscreen (mineral filter, perfume-free, SPF 50).

For older babies and toddlers, lubricate every 2 hours, and always after swimming or sweating.

6. Watch the heat

In addition to UV radiation, heat is an important consideration. Babies cannot yet properly regulate their body temperature. Watch for signs of overheating such as redness, irritability, lots of crying or weakness. Always provide plenty of water (breast or bottle feeding) and cooling.

Sun = enjoyment, if you're smart about it

With the right preparation, your little one can enjoy the sunshine - safely and comfortably. Consider shade, protective clothing, good sunglasses and ventilation in the stroller. That way, you can make every sunny outing a worry-free experience.

At Moalie, you'll find stylish baby essentials that combine comfort and safety - even when the sun is shining.
