Probiotics for babies: why it's important for a healthy start
Probiotics for babies play a vital role in the development of gut flora and the immune system. As a baby coach and neonatology nurse, I see daily how important probiotics are for babies, both preventively and for existing symptoms. In this blog, I share the benefits, recent insights and my own experience with probiotics for babies.
What is probiotics?
Probiotics literally means "for life. They are live bacteria and yeasts that have a positive effect on the digestive tract and, therefore, on the immune system. In addition to probiotics, there are also prebiotics, which stimulate the growth and activity of probiotics in the colon. Probiotics for babies are strain-specific: different strains work in different ways. The most common groups:
-
Lactobacillus
-
Bifidobacterium
-
Streptococcus
-
Saccharomyces boulardii
Each group has a unique effect on the body.
My experience with probiotics for babies as a baby coach
My name is Daniëlle Kempers, baby coach, neonatology nurse and owner of Moalie. With years of experience in caring for babies, I guide parents with expert advice. I often recommend probiotics for babies, for example for cramps, digestive problems or to support the immune system. Even during pregnancy, probiotics can have a positive effect on your baby's intestinal flora.
Gut flora and babies: how probiotics help
A newborn baby's gut flora is crucial for a healthy immune system. Probiotics for babies help build this flora. Babies born by cesarean section or bottle-fed have a different bacterial composition than babies born vaginally and breast-fed. Fortunately, artificial formula is often fortified with probiotics these days.

The benefits of probiotics for babies
-
Stronger immune system
-
Less chance of eczema and allergies
-
Better digestion, less cramps
-
Less risk of reflux and thrush
-
Less crying in babies with bowel problems
In premature babies, probiotics even appear to protect against NEC (necrotizing enterocolitis).
Probiotics for reflux and crying babies
Probiotics for babies can alleviate symptoms such as reflux and excessive crying. Studies show that babies given probiotics cry less and digest better. Lactobacillus Reuteri in particular is known for this effect. Crying babies often have fewer lactobacilli in their stools.

Probiotics in breast milk
Breast milk naturally contains probiotics. Therefore, breastfeeding helps to build a healthy gut flora. Did you know that nearly 30% of the good bacteria in breastfed babies comes through the milk? Mothers can also take probiotics themselves to enhance this effect.
Benefits of probiotics for mothers
-
Stronger immune system
-
Less chance of infections
-
Supports digestion and blood sugar levels
-
Possible prevention of gestational diabetes and postpartum depression

New insights: brain development and probiotics
Recent studies show that certain probiotics, such as Bifidobacterium breve, may contribute to the baby's brain development during pregnancy. They improve nutrient transport to the brain.
Which probiotics do you choose for your baby?
Choose a product with proven strains such as Lactobacillus Reuteri. Pay attention to the ingredients and avoid sugar and unnecessary excipients. Liquid drops such as those from Vitals are convenient for babies.
